SECOND GENERATION WEDDING
ABOUT THE FILM
Kofo is a first generation Nigerian-American from an affluent family with deep roots in Lagos. She is the youngest of four children, all of whom were raised in Nigeria except for herself.
She met her fiancé Tunde through family members and mutual friends that encouraged her to marry a prosperous investment banker. Unfortunately his career was short lived due to extravagant spending and partying that he hid from Kofo until he already popped the question. They are now living above their means and cannot afford to have the wedding that Kofo has always dreamed of.
As a solution, Tunde expressed financial distress to Kofo’s overbearing, helicopter mom Omolara. She offered to bail them out of their troubles under one condition—the ceremony must be in her hometown of Lagos. This decision has since made Omolara co-opt total creative input for her daughter’s wedding and Kofo is sick of it.
Second Generation Wedding will show Kofo’s desperate attempt to take the reigns from her mother. But her mother has a family secret to share that could change the lives of everyone in the family forever.
KOFO (Appears ages 25-32) is a Nigerian-American that fears her mother and holds a lot of resentment from her childhood. She doesn’t hide her family’s affluence, but her outspoken demeanor indicates that she is not fully on board for pretense. Kofo is the black, Americanized sheep of her family. She loves her fiancé Tunde, but worries that marrying someone from the culture will embolden her family to get too familiar and involve themselves in all of her marital affairs.
OMOLARA (Appears 50-65) is Kofo’s snobbish, worldly, aristocratic, demanding mother that married a diplomat with fat pockets who is often traveling for “work”. She wears the finest of fabrics, clothing and jewelry. Omolara has always placed pressure and scrutiny towards her children without any filter. She’s stressed from strained friendships, business relationships and worst of all, issues with her husband. Things are incredibly rocky and she needs to get her children on her side to bring her family back together as best as she can.
ENIOLA (mid to late 30s) is the bridge between her mother and her sister Kofo. She is a product of Nigerian high-society life and seamlessly navigates the tricky landscape of her culture’s social hierarchies. Similar to Kofo, Eniola often doesn’t agree with the way that young people and women are treated, but will never get a pass to freely express herself because she “should know better.” She empathizes with Kofo’s struggles to get through to their mother, so she steps in and offers mediation to their frequent conflicts.
TUNDE (Late 20s to mid 30s) is madly in love with his “American wife”, but failed to realize that Kofo would have very specific demands and expectations of her future husband. Tunde wants to lock his married life down, but worries that he dug himself too deep into a hole with his reckless lifestyle. He hopes that Kofo can work though the conflict with her mom, or their plan to have their wedding in Nigeria will break their marriage apart. ***This character can be Nigerian-British or Nigerian American.
